A morning with Soup Vans, where kindness meets community

On a recent visit to the Soup Vans site in Kensington, we were welcomed by Deidre and a small team of volunteers. The space was simple, but full of warmth. People worked quietly side by side, preparing food that would reach hundreds of people in need that week.

What stayed with us most was meeting Bill and Lenie. They have been volunteering with Soup Vans for the past three years, and with Vinnies for more than 25 years. Each week, they travel from Moonee Ponds to Kensington for their Thursday shift.

On the day we visited, they were helping prepare close to 500 sandwiches. There was music playing, light conversation, and a sense of ease in the room. Bill shared that what they value most is the flexibility and the welcoming environment. There is no pressure, just a shared understanding that everyone is there to help.

This is what makes Soup Vans special. It is not just about the number of meals prepared or the number of people supported. It is about the people behind it, showing up, contributing in their own way, and being part of a caring community.

For anyone thinking about volunteering, Soup Vans is a great place to start. The roles are flexible, the tasks are simple, and the impact is real. Whether it is preparing food, helping on a van run, or just offering a friendly presence, every contribution matters.

Sometimes, it is these small, consistent acts that make the biggest difference.
